About this piece: Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones is photographed next to his beloved Aston Martin DB6 car in London, 1966. Mankowitz recalls, “Mick was between homes at this time and this portrait with his beloved Aston Martin DB6 was taken outside his old flat in a mews near Baker Street in Central London”.
Gered Mankowitz, son of author Wolf Mankowitz and psychotherapist Ann Mankowitz, left school at 15 and began a photography apprenticeship inspired by actor Peter Sellers. In 1963, he opened his first studio in Mason’s Yard, the heart of 1960s London. He photographed Marianne Faithfull in 1964 and began working with The Rolling Stones in 1965, touring the U.S. and creating iconic album covers. In 1967, he captured legendary portraits of Jimi Hendrix during two sessions at his studio that would go on to become some of the most iconic and widely-known portraits of the great musician.
