Jimi Hendrix with hands on hips (colourised), 1967 — Signed Edition
About this piece: This iconic color-blocked print features legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix during a photo studio session in London in 1967. The photographer recalled “I had the privilege to work with Jimi twice in 1967…We got on incredibly well and I found him to be a most charming, humble and witty person as well as a willing and enthusiastic subject.
Gered Mankowitz, son of author Wolf Mankowitz and psychotherapist Ann Mankowitz, left school at 15 and began a photography apprenticeship inspired by actor Peter Sellers. In 1963, he opened his first studio in Mason’s Yard, the heart of 1960s London. He photographed Marianne Faithfull in 1964 and began working with The Rolling Stones in 1965, touring the U.S. and creating iconic album covers. In 1967, he captured legendary portraits of Jimi Hendrix during two sessions at his studio that would go on to become some of the most iconic and widely-known portraits of the great musician.
