Leaving school at 15 without qualifications, he pursued photography after inspiration from actor Peter Sellers and completed a brief apprenticeship at Camera Press Ltd. In 1963, Gered opened his first studio in Mason’s Yard, at the heart of 1960s London. He photographed Marianne Faithfull in 1964, under the management of Andrew Loog Oldham, who also introduced him to The Rolling Stones. From 1965, Gered toured with the Stones, creating iconic album covers, and in 1967, he captured legendary portraits of Jimi Hendrix during two sessions at his studio.

For over 50 years, Gered has remained active in the music industry, contributed to leading magazines, and created award-winning advertising images. He now focuses on exhibitions, publishing books, and selling prints in galleries worldwide. In 2016, he was named a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and has lectured at University College Falmouth. Gered is currently based in Cornwall.
